Jaipur, 17th November 2024 — ARBI CON : The International Conference on Dispute Resolution and Arbitration, themed “Innovative Pathways for Global Justice,” successfully concluded at the Faculty of Law, NIMS University, Jaipur. Held over two days on 16th and 17th November 2024, the conference brought together prominent judges, legal scholars, practitioners, and academicians from around the world. This prestigious event focused on exploring the evolving landscape of arbitration, emphasizing its role in promoting global justice through innovative and efficient dispute resolution mechanisms.

The conference commenced with a grand inaugural ceremony at the Rajeshwari Auditorium. The Chief Guest, Smt. Varsha Chandra, Joint Secretary of the Law Commission of India, and the Guest of Honour, Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Professor at the Indian International University of Legal Education and Research, were welcomed with the traditional lighting of the diya. Their opening addresses highlighted the transformative role of arbitration in today’s interconnected world. Smt. Chandra emphasized the need for adopting innovative solutions in dispute resolution, while Dr. Chakraborty stressed the importance of adapting arbitration practices to meet the demands of global justice.

Day one featured multiple technical sessions led by distinguished experts who discussed critical issues in arbitration. Among the key presentations was one by Mr. Akash Gupta, Assistant Professor at Jindal Global Law School, who spoke on the topic “Modification of Arbitral Awards in India: Right or Wrong?” He discussed the challenges posed by the interference of Indian courts in arbitration awards, urging a balanced approach to uphold the integrity of the arbitration process. Dr. Deepak Jindal, Assistant Professor at Panjab University, used an engaging analogy in his presentation on the role of advocacy in arbitration, stating, “Arbitration is becoming like a heavy-loaded truck rather than a sports car; what was expected to be a smooth process has become overloaded.” This analogy resonated with many attendees, highlighting the increasing complexities in arbitration proceedings.

Ms. Apoorva Dixit, Assistant Professor at G.D. Goenka University, discussed the influence of arbitration on the Indian economy, underscoring its potential to foster economic growth through swift dispute resolution. Dr. Dayanand Murthy from Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University provided insights on the use, challenges, and future of AI in arbitration, emphasizing that AI is inevitable and must be harnessed to reduce biases by utilizing accurate data. Another noteworthy presentation was by Mr. Amitesh Chandra Mishra, Managing Partner at ACM Legal, who spoke on arbitration in infrastructure disputes, stressing the need for specialized mechanisms to handle complex infrastructure projects.

Day two continued with impactful discussions, including Dr. Rajesh Kapoor of NALSAR University, who explored how arbitration promotes equitable solutions in cross-border disputes, ensuring a level playing field for parties from diverse jurisdictions. Dr. Shobhitabh Srivastava from Amity Law School delved into the complexities of sovereign immunity in investment arbitration, highlighting the negotiation challenges between developed and developing countries. Param Bhamra, Founding Partner of Mediate Guru, shared insights on virtual hearings in arbitration, while Dr. Ashu Dhiman concluded the presentations with his discussion on the future trends and challenges of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), stating that ODR is the future of arbitration.

The conference concluded with a grand valedictory ceremony where the distinguished speakers were honored for their invaluable contributions. The awards for Best Paper and Best Presenter were presented by Smt. Varsha Chandra and Dr. Chakraborty. The event ended on a high note with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Kishor Biradar, Assistant Professor at NIMS School of Law, acknowledging the efforts of the organizing committee, speakers, and participants for making the event a success.

The conference emphasized the significance of embracing innovative arbitration practices to promote global justice, leveraging technology to streamline dispute resolution processes. It provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among legal professionals and scholars, setting the stage for future editions that will continue to explore advancements in arbitration.
