I am Dr. Nagendra Vadlamudi, a resident in Interventional Radiology and currently an MD (IR) candidate at NIMS University, Jaipur. I am deeply honored to share that I was awarded the prestigious CIRSE Fellowship Grant, enabling me to train at the Medizinisch Radiologisches Institut (MRI) in Zurich under the mentorship of Dr. Prof. Christoph Binkert.
Learning at the Forefront of IR in Switzerland
Switzerland was more than just a training ground — it was a transformative experience. Dr. Binkert and his team welcomed me with open arms and patiently guided me through complex interventional radiology procedures. Their collective expertise helped refine my clinical instincts, technical skills, and procedural precision. The MRI outpatient clinic itself was a revelation: clean, highly efficient, and built around same-day patient care — something I believe can be replicated at NIMS to make IR more accessible back home.
My time in Zurich gave me hands-on exposure to:
- Genicular artery embolization — working closely with Dr. Martin Takes and his team, I learned to use Nexsphere particles for highly selective embolization.
- Prostate artery embolization, leveraging high-end imaging like CBCT for planning and guidance.
- Use of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) for peripheral arterial disease.
- Deployment of Jetstream and Rotarex devices — gaining a practical understanding of their applications and workflow.
- And importantly, observing an optimized workflow of IR care — from teleconsultation to discharge follow-up in an outpatient setup.

Bringing Back Insights to NIMS University
This fellowship wasn’t just about me — it’s a win for NIMS University and our interventional radiology department. I envision adapting the Swiss model of streamlined outpatient IR care into our institution to make high-quality IR services more patient-friendly and efficient.
CIRSE 2025: Sharing Knowledge on the Global Stage
After my stay in Zurich, I attended CIRSE 2025 in Barcelona, where I had the honor of presenting both a paper and a poster at the world’s largest interventional radiology meeting. It was inspiring to connect with pioneers in IR, network with fellow delegates from India and abroad, and gain fresh perspectives on how IR is evolving globally.
Gratitude & Acknowledgements
This journey would not have been possible without the support of:
- CIRSE, for believing in me and granting this incredible opportunity.
- Dr. Christoph Binkert and his team in Zurich, for their mentorship and warmth throughout my stay.
- NIMS University, especially Dr. Balvir Singh Tomar, Dr. Sanjiv Sharma, and Dr. Manish Shaw, for their constant encouragement and guidance.
- Dr. Pankaj Banode, who motivated me to apply and pursue this fellowship.
What This Means for the Future
I believe this experience will help me bring global best practices in interventional radiology to NIMS University. I am more determined than ever to build a world-class, patient-centered IR program at our institution.
Thank you, CIRSE, for your exceptional vision in empowering young interventional radiologists — not just to learn, but to lead, innovate, and uplift healthcare in their home countries.
