Department of Biotechnology
Full time course spread over semesters. This includes Biochemistry and Biophysics, Biostatstics and Bioinformatics, Genetics, Instrumentation, and Immunotechnology, Genetic Resources, Cell and Molecular Biology, Recomenant of DNA Technology, Environmental Biology , Bioprocess Technology, Microbial Biotechnology, Tissue Culture Technology, Animal Biotechnology and Plant Biotechnology.
The department has set up on itself the condition to achieving excellence in the shortest span of time. In this direction the Department of Biotechnology is approaching biotech industries not only to collaborate for product oriented research but also for the placement of the students. Innovative and effective teaching methods are also being adopted. The department is rapidly heading towards achieving excellence to put tough challenge to top-most biotechnology institute in India in near future. A huge Biotechnology wing is under construction which will be handed over to the department soon.
Department of Biochemistry
The Department since its inception in 2008, the secret of success of this department lies in the academic environment and close ties between teachers and students. Our teaching programmes for undergraduates and postgraduates attract the best students from the University and beyond. Our teaching and research staff are committed to training the next generation of biochemists, who go on to play roles in many aspects of scientific research, industry, government and teaching.
Department of Microbiology
The Bachelor and Masters course in Microbiology was started to impart knowledge about the importance of micro-organisms as experimental tools in basic research, biochemical and genetical studies; their role in the maintenance of environmental quality, agriculture and medicine and in the pharmaceutical, dairy, detergent, leather, starch, food and feed, fermentation and pulp and paper industries. There is an increasing demand for trained microbiologists in pollution control organizations, food processing, pharmaceutical and fermentation industries, industrial effluent treatment plants and in various national and international research institutes.
The research areas available for Ph.D. students are microbial differentiation, food and industrial microbiology, environmental microbiology, agricultural microbiology, microbial pathogens and pathogenicity, medical microbiology, immunology, clinical microbiology, genetic engineering and microbial molecular biology.
The research interests of the Department are in the areas of production of industrially important enzymes and carbohydrates from yeasts, moulds, actinomycetes and bacteria; microbial differentiation, lignocellulose biodegradation, ethanol production from lignocellulosics, molecular biology of lignin degradation, antifungal antibiotics, hemolysins, mass inoculum production of ectomycorrhiza and other important fungi, carbon sequestration using heterotrophs, bioremediation, understanding host pathogen interaction, new drug targets, microbial genomics and proteomics and metagenomics. Collaboration with industries for research is an important thrust in the Department.
Department of Genetics
The Department of Genetics at Nims University houses a faculty working on diverse problems, using a variety of approaches and model organisms, unified in their focus on the genome as an organizing principle for understanding biological phenomena. Genetics is not perceived simply as a subject, but rather as a way of viewing and approaching biological phenomena.
While the range of current efforts can best be appreciated by reading the research interests of individual faculty, the scope of the work conducted in the Department includes human genetics of both single gene disorders and complex traits, development of genomic technology, cancer biology, developmental biology, signal transduction, cell biological problems, stem cell biology, computational genetics, immunology, synthetic biology, epigenetics, evolutionary biology and plant biology.
The mission of our Department encompasses research and education while serving as a focal point for drawing together and integrating basic and clinical genetic efforts conducted across the University and its affiliated hospitals. The Department of Genetics is strongly committed to supporting its current community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and to securing the best new scientists, setting its sight on new research opportunities in the future.
Department of Bioinformatics
The Department of Bioinformatics was started in the year 2010, to facilitate the teaching and research in the interdisciplinary areas of Structural Bioinformatics, Computational Genomics and Proteomics to create an intellectual environment for interdisciplinary education and training. The Department of Bioinformatics is offering a two year M.Sc., degree course and one year M. Phil., course in Bioinformatics. Doctoral programme is also being offered in Bioinformatics. Our department has published many research articles related to Human diseases, pathogenic and non pathogenic organisms.
Department of Environmental Sciences
The Department of Environmental Sciences was started 2010. The new department is based on environmental education and research. The major main subjects are: Aquatic Sciences, Environmental Ecology and Environmental Change and Policy. It is also possible to do a Master’s degree which gives qualifications for teaching in biology. Research at the department covers both biologically and socially oriented environmental research. Strong skills in both disciplines and cross-disciplinarily give a good basis for solution-oriented research and teaching based on the most recent environmental knowledge.
