Department of Pharmaceutics

The Department of Pharmaceutics is a place where an unwavering commitment to excellence in research, instruction and service is demonstrated through the extraordinary productivity and success of our faculty, staff and students. Our program focuses on Physiologically-Based Approaches to Drug Delivery and Disposition. We offer a training environment that includes cutting edge laboratory instrumentation and technologies, award-winning faculty, devoted and experienced teachers, and knowledgeable staff. The Department of Pharmaceutics is part of the institute of Pharmacy. In addition to teaching, all faculty members are involved in collaborative research projects with clinical and other basic scientists within the Health Center or on campus. Many maintain collaborative ties with scientists in other universities and the pharmaceutical industry worldwide.

Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology plays an important role in the educational and research missions of Nims University. Our faculty provides professional instruction in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Allied Health and Graduate Studies. Our trainees successfully compete for prestigious positions in academia, industry and the government. In addition to teaching, our faculty conducts cutting edge research in such disciplines as cardiovascular, pulmonary, cancer, renal, central nervous system and behavioral pharmacology. This department has been developed as a hub for research in indigenous drugs. Our faculty’s research interests also include the areas of drug metabolism, genetics, molecular and cellular signaling, integrins and adhesion molecules and pain control. Overall, we have made substantial progress toward our goal of establishing a program in “Integrative Pharmacological Sciences.” This program is unique in that it uses a combination of in vitro and in vivo model systems to understand the pathophysiology of disease and identify potential therapeutics.

Department of Pharm. Chemistry

The teachers and students of this department are working in various areas of research such as pharmaceutical analysis; drug development, drug design phytochemistry and drug screening and synthesis of medicinal and related substances through QSAR, their structure elucidation and characterization. Our department steadily attracts academically- and professionally- talented students. While our program offers a rigorous didactic and experimental education curriculums, our students also benefit from our research facilities, and healthcare practice settings. As a worldwide recognized leader in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, our current student body is diverse and reflective of the national and global population. Department of Pharm. Marketing

The Department of Pharmaceutical Marketing is primarily designed for individuals interested in starting a career in the marketing department of pharmaceutical companies, working as a product manager, medical or pharmaceutical representative etc. Students of Post Graduates degree holders of Pharmaceutical Marketing (M. Pharm. Pharma marketing) & post-graduate diploma in this department acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical ability in marketing and sales. We believe that post graduates of this program will be seen as attractive employees for executives in the pharmaceutical sector and therefore it is a great investment. Department is also providing state-of- the -art facilities for the upliftment of the students in the various field in pharmaceutical Marketing.

Department of Pharmacovigilance

The Department of Pharmacovigilance is a discipline which is concerned with identifying, validating, quantifying, evaluating and minimizing the adverse effects of medicine thereby increasing the safety of drugs in use. It is a study of drug related adverse effect carried out by pharmaceutical industries to suggest warnings and recommendation for product withdrawal.Pharmacovigilance is not only an academic necessity but also a need to ensure security of human beings. It is an accepted opinion of the mass to scrutinize the adverse effects of medicines which have been released in the market.

Department of Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance is a specialty field where the personnel work towards ensuring the quality of a product or service that the organization offers.This department attempts to have nucleus of experience for the application of concepts and systems of quality in higher education locally.One of the aims of this department is to instill and enhance the quality insurance in both staff members and officials of the university.

Department of Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacists are integrated into all aspects of healthcare, a distinction that carries with it a host of unique challenges and opportunities. At Nims we prepare our students for all these, allowing them to become highly respected health care professional, instructing your patients and other health care colleagues on a variety of medication therapy management issues.Our faculties have expertise in a variety of clinical specialties and engage in active clinical research in these areas, allowing our students the opportunity to learn from clinical experts both in the classroom as well as in the community via our extensive array of preceptor experiences. The department of pharmacy practice is known for its expertise in ID/HIV, transplant, nephrology, primary care, oncology, and cardiac care.

Department of Pharmacognosy

The Department of Pharmacognosy has a distinctive role in the essential field of drug research and carries out studies on the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs and drug substances of natural origin. We focus on to be distinctive department locally, nationally & internationally, as a part of a high-level faculty. We offer high-quality education to cultivate and prepare outstanding skilled pharmacists. We aim to reach a leading position in research in the field of natural products. The Department of Pharmacognosy is completely dedicated to provide excellence in education and research in the disciplines of pharmacognosy & natural products chemistry to define the direction & scope of herbal drug therapy through continuous & innovative research.

Laboratory Facilities

The Pharmacy Group has various laboratories for conducting courses and providing research facilities in the field of computer-aided drug design, synthesis and characterization of novel drug entities, pharmacological screening and toxicological studies, pharmaceutical analysis, drug delivery systems, pharmacokinetics and biopharmaceutics, phytochemistry and pharmacognosy.Central Analytical Laboratory houses many sophisticated instruments, which are used for training of the students as well as carrying out research work at all levels. The instruments include – IR Moisture Balance, Visual Digital Melting Point Apparatus, Brookfield Viscometer, Environmental Cabinet, UV-Visible Spectrophotometers, UV-Visible-NIR Scanning Spectrophotometer, IR Spectrophotometer, FTIR Spectrophotometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Scanning Spectroflourimeter, NMR Spectrometer, High Voltage Electrophoresis, Polarimeters, Ultra and Refrigerated Centrifuges, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Gas Liquid Chromatograph, High Performance Thin Layer Chromatograph and High Performance Liquid Chromatograph with auto-sampler and various detectors.

Central Facilities

Some of the central facilities available at Nims Institute of Pharmacy to students and faculty members of the Group for research include:

  • Information Processing Centre caters to the computing needs of all students and staff and training requirements of several computer-oriented courses. It also houses a PARAM 100 super computer. The students and faculty in the institute are provided with e-mail and internet browsing facility.
  • Instrumentation Centre is responsible for the installation, testing, service and maintenance of all instruments across the institute as well as providing facilities for design, development, fabrication and testing of various projects.
  • Centre for Software Development caters to the need for software development for in-house needs as well as external organizations.
  • Central Library looks after the need for books in various disciplines including Science, Technology and Humanities. Reference Library subscribes many current periodicals and makes available their back volumes. Reference books are displayed for reading within the premises.
  • Centre for Biotechnology encourages the development of excellence in Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering and other emerging areas.
